What are paid baggage options?

Some airlines don't include checked or carry-on baggage in their base fare. When you book a flight with one of these airlines, Routespring now shows the available paid baggage options directly on the payment page, so you can add a bag while you book instead of arranging it separately with the airline later.

When you select a bag, its price is added to your booking total, charged together with the fare, and recorded as its own line item. The bag then appears on your invoice and in the trip itinerary, so everything stays in one place.

How to add a bag to your booking

You'll do this on the payment page, the final step before you confirm the booking.

1
Select your flight and continue to payment

Search, pick your flight, and proceed as usual until you reach the payment page.

2
Open the baggage dropdown

If the airline sells baggage for your fare, you'll see a baggage options dropdown on the payment page. Each option shows the number of bags, the total weight allowance, and the price — for example, "1 bag — 25Kg total — 39.94 USD".

3
Choose the option you want

Select a bag option from the dropdown. The booking total updates immediately to include the bag, so you can see the full price before you commit. To remove a bag, set the dropdown back to the no-baggage option.

A bag selected: it is listed in the price breakdown (1 bag $39.94), the total updates to $199.27, and the × removes it.
4
Review the total and confirm

Check that the total reflects the fare plus any bag you added, then confirm the booking as usual. The bag is booked and charged together with the flight.

Adding a bag is always optional
If you leave the dropdown on the no-baggage option, you pay only the base fare and no bag is added — the booking goes through exactly as it would without this feature.

Round trips and multiple travellers

Round trips. When your booking has an outbound and a return leg, each leg has its own baggage dropdown. Add a bag to the outbound, the return, both, or neither — the total combines whatever you select.

Multiple travellers. If you're booking for several people in one trip, choose baggage for the group on the payment page. The bag charge is calculated for the group and shown in the total, so everyone's baggage is booked and invoiced together.

Booking several flights at once. Each flight in your cart has its own baggage choice. Adding a bag to one flight never affects the others — you pay only for the bags on the flights where you selected them.

A multi-flight cart: each flight has its own baggage dropdown and its own total, with no effect on the others.

How the charge appears

After your booking is confirmed, the bag you added is reflected in three places:

WhereWhat you'll see
✓ Booking totalThe amount you're charged is the base fare plus the exact price of the bag you selected.
✓ InvoiceThe bag appears as its own line item, at the same price you saw when you selected it.
✓ ItineraryYour trip itinerary reflects the baggage you booked alongside the flight details.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't I see baggage options on my flight?
Not every airline sells baggage through Routespring, and some fares already include it. If no dropdown appears, there's nothing to add for that fare — book as normal.
Do I have to add a bag?
No. Baggage is completely optional. Leave the dropdown on the no-baggage option and you'll pay only the base fare.
Can I remove a bag after selecting it?
Yes, before you confirm. Set the dropdown back to the no-baggage option and the charge is removed from your total.
Can I add a bag to just the return leg of a round trip?
Yes. The outbound and return legs each have their own baggage dropdown, so you can add a bag to one, both, or neither.
How is baggage handled when I book for several travellers?
Choose baggage for the group on the payment page. The charge is calculated for the group and included in the total, and everyone's baggage is booked and invoiced together.
Will the bag show up on my invoice for expenses?
Yes. Because the bag is booked through Routespring, it appears as a line item on the same invoice and itinerary as the flight — no separate airline receipt needed.
Does the bag get charged at the same time as the flight?
Yes. The bag is booked and charged together with the fare in a single transaction — there's no second payment step.
